Junior professor position at Humboldt University, Berlin

The Institute of Social Sciences at Humboldt University Berlin seeks to hire a Junior Professor in the area of “Diversity Politics,” who will teach in the BA-MA program in Social Sciences, as well as offer courses on a regular basis in the area of Gender Studies.

Precisely because the development of a new field of inquiry provides a younger scholar with the opportunity to forge an international scholarly reputation not only by making a mark on a pre-existing field but to define what that new field is to become, we do not wish to pre-define this field, but simply to point to some lines of inquiry that seem promising:

• the role of the concepts of diversity, difference and equality ( as well as the conflicts amongst them) in both classical and contemporary social and political thought

• the role played by diversity—whether based on class gender, race, ethnicity, religiosity or another dimension of stratification—as the basis for the definition of interests and their expression in politics, and the struggles and achievements of such social and political movements

• the ends and means of diversity policies—whether corporate or governmental

The successful candidate has:

• established a track record of excellence in research and teaching

• is committed to interdisciplinary research spanning the boundaries of politics and sociology

• combines theoretical and empirical work in some fashion, and embraces the historical-comparative method

• (for reasons of career development) is well-versed in a standard sub-discipline area of political science, such as political theory, international relations, Ameri-can or German politics in comparative perspective; public policy; comparative politics; political sociology.

Applicants must meet the legal requirements for a junior professor as stipulated in § 102a BerlHG.

This professorship serves to increase the representation of women at Humboldt University Berlin. Applications from scholars located outside of Germany are welcomed. Severely disabled applicants with equivalent qualifications will be given preferential treatment.
